Choosing the Right Floor
Appearance, budget and maintenance are a few of the main factors to take into consideration when choosing the right floor. Let’s look at an overview flooring choices along with tips for specific care for your flooring projects.
Wood Flooring
Among popular choices of wood for flooring are oak (#1), cherry, maple, pine and hickory. Budget comes into play here not only with the type of wood, but the kind you purchase, as well: finished or unfinished. Finished wood generally costs more; unfinished, costing less, means you need to stain or varnish the wood yourself.
Care and maintenance are also major factors to consider. You need to know the type of wood finish the flooring has in order to know how to clean it regularly. Old fashioned water and vinegar doesn’t always cut the grime. With wood, you generally have either a penetrating seal that soaks deep into the wood and needs wax and regular maintenances long-term. Or you have a surface finish that makes the surface sealed (like with polyurethane), water- and stain-resistant, only needed the basic water and vinegar spot cleaning.

Carpeting
Carpeting comes in such a variety of plush thickness, you need to determine traffic flow and then compare life estimates of each product. Look at piles (thickness) and padding for underneath. Look at coloring and point of display; i.e. it sunshine is on the carpet a lot, fading can happen over time. And also look for soil- and stain-resistance materials in the carpeting. If carpet is your choice, choose the best quality you can afford at the time for the most durable product and longest life.
